About Me:
Richard J. Arend, Phd PEng
Professor Richard J. Arend is a graduate of the University of British Columbia's Policy Analysis and Strategy doctoral program. He holds the L.L. Bean/Lee Surace Chair in Strategic Management as a Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern Maine. Prior academic appointments include the Management Faculty of New York University's Stern School of Business. His interests lie in analyzing unusual modes of firm value creation and destruction - most recently surrounding uncertainty, surprise and spirituality - and he has published in several top journals, including AMR, SMJ, OS, SEJ, JBV, JBVI, SO!, JoM, OBHDP, SBE, JMS, JBE and more. He has over 80 academic published articles, and several chapters to his credit, as well as three books and an upcoming comprehensive literature review. He specializes in critical assessments of the current theories of strategy and of entrepreneurship. He has over twenty-five years of academic experience researching and teaching business and has served on the Editorial Boards of several journals. He was also a professional engineer with work and consulting experience in aerospace and computing. [Also, past CASC Race Ontario Rookie of the Year - all categories - and, F1600(R) Champion.]
